Geneva Motor Show: VW Arteon

The four door coupe segment is starting to get crowded. So Volkswagen throws itself head first in there.

The replacement for the VW CC is here and my, isn’t it a looker. Called the Arteon, it kills off the CC (Formally Passat CC) it will sit above the Passat range and provide a different and cheaper alternative to the Audi A5 Sportback and BMW 4 Series Gran Turismo.

First off, the looks are much improved over the old CC. VW have gone to great lengths to make this stand out from their current range by not giving it the standard family face. The larger grille, incorporating the LED headlights makes the front of the car seem low down and sporty. The rear however could have had a bit more time spent on it rather than just sticking a Passat’s backside on it. Considering that VW loves giving its cars very subtle changes with each generation/makeover, you have to commend them for being bold with the Arteon styling.

Safety has been a big feature for the Arteon with VW’s Emergency Assist system (it knows when the driver is having a medical emergency, and is able to move the car into the slow lane autonomously) and Lane Assist which has been upgraded to detect swerving lorries. The headlights are also linked to the cars GPS so they know the road ahead and know where the corners are on your journey. Smart Stuff.

Underneath, the Arteon uses the MQB platform that we are all familiar with now and is fitted with standard engines that are available across the VW range. The most powerful is the 276bhp 2.0-litre turbo four cylinder engine which comes with seven-speed DSGs and 4Motion AWD as standard. Surely a car like this would have been better suited to RWD especially with the powerful engine for some fun B-Road action.

The car launches in summer with prices expected to be around £30,000.

Like the look of the Arteon or do VW have no chance against the likes of Audi and BMW with their premium models? Let us know your thoughts below…
