After months of spy shots and strange wire art models, the Range Rover Evoque Convertible has finally landed and due to appear at this month’s LA Motor Show.  

Now, before we get started there is one big question that needs answering. Why? Why does the world need a convertible Evoque? Let’s find out.

While the Evoque Convertible may not be the first ever SUV convertible (see Nissan Murano Convertible), it is defiantly the most serious. Range Rover has gone to great lengths to make sure that this is more than a marketing gimmick.

It will be priced at £50,000 which is a lot of money many will argue but is it? For your £50,000 you essentially get two cars. A normal Evoque which can be used for day to day life, and a four seater convertible for the few days a year that the rain stops. Plus, Range Rover has remodelled rear bulkhead to make sure that those rear 2 seats can actually fit human beings.  Four six-foot tall people can easily enjoy this car roof up or down.

Range Rover has also kept the Evoque’s ability to go off-road. The convertible can match the hardtop identically when the going gets rough. Both have the same ground clearance and wading depth. Range Rover has also tried to keep the centre of gravity low so it won’t topple over while off road.  The only difference is that the convertible is heaver. Quite a bit heavier due to extra chassis reinforcements in order to keep it stiff on the road. 260kg heavier in fact.

Although hardly any Evoque Convertibles will be taken on more than a muddy field at Glastonbury, it’s good to know that Range Rover still made the effort to ensure the Convertible is a true Range Rover. Creating this car was more than just slicing the roof off. Time and money were spent on the Evoque to give buyers the best possible car. For example, Range Rover spent ages working on a quiet roof mechanism (which is something that has hardly ever been complained about) as not to disturb the passengers. Little things like that are taken for granted but can make all the difference.

The fabric roof folds away into the rear of the car, rather than piling on top of the car (looking at you Mini) and doesn’t intrude into the boot. The boot itself is hardly huge but its 251-litre capacity is nothing to be laughed at either. The roof can be used at speeds of up to 30mph and takes a speedy 18 seconds to be fully retracted and 21 seconds to be put back up. Handy for the summer showers in typically British weather.

There are those here who would see this as yet another stupid niche, and if it had been BMW or Audi then I probably would have agreed. But I do have a soft spot for Range Rover. There is just something special about them. Maybe it’s because I am British or maybe it’s because I am from Essex but I like them.  And I expect the Evoque Convertible to be a big seller, especially in Europe.

All this leads back to the first question of why. Why does the world need a convertible Evoque? It doesn’t but I’m sure glad they made one.
