BTCC’s New Contender

Hi Internet

Now, I am not a keen Motorsport enthusiast, I hold my hands up and admit this. I am the type of person who will watch motor racing crash compilations on YouTube. However there is one type of motorsport that I find myself getting more and more enthralled in. The BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) is in my opinion; a fast, action packed racing series. Now I’m sure that F1 fanatics will argue that F1 is more advanced and is more popular and that’s all very well and good. But for me, F1 just seems a bit tame. But that’s just me. Anyway, the reason I bring the BTCC to your attention is the fact that a new team has been announced for the 2015 season. With the 2014 seasoning finishing in typical dramatic fashion a few weeks ago, this announcement has been timed perfectly.

Infiniti BTCC

The 2015 grid line is about to get not only a new car but also a brand new team. Infiniti are joining the BTCC with their brand new Q50. The new race spec car was unveiled alongside a showroom Q50 which made the racing modifications even more apparently. The racing Q50 looks like it means business especially with it dark paint scheme (no word on whether that will be changed before the season starts). I must admit that I am very much looking forward seeing the 2015 season especially as the Q50 are going to be rear wheel drive. For those who have not seen the BTCC before, there has been some discussion (heated at times) between drivers and fans alike about the use of rear wheel drive cars. They claim that rear wheel drive cars have an unfair advantage when racing and this was not helped by the fact that this year’s winner was Colin Turkington using a rear wheel drive BMW 1-Series. Both Q50’s that will be racing will be NGTC (Next Generation Touring Car) and will have a modified 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with over 300 BHP running through a six speed sequential gearbox.

Not only is there a new car being introduced but also a brand new team. Infiniti are not a huge name in the UK yet and have dabbled in motorsport before. They are currently involved in Formula 1 but more as a sponsor rather than an actually team. The news that they will be competing in the BTCC was quite a shock but a welcome shock. The company have been around in the UK for a few years now and seen as a quirky alternative to the German manufactures. Instead of Infiniti entering the BTCC as a standalone team, they have taken the bold move by backing the non-profit team ‘Support Our Paras’. ‘Support Our Paras’ (or SOP) are the official charity of the Parachute Regiment and will involve several injured paratroopers within the team working on the car during the season. The reason for this team up is for the aim for raised funds “for the welfare and benevolence” of the injured paratroopers and their families. All profits made by the team will be donated to the SOP charity. So clearly everyone will want them to do well but also puts pressure onto the teams’ drivers. The two drivers that have been chosen by Infiniti are Richard Hawken (triple club championship winner) and Derek Palmer Jr.
This could be a very interesting year for the BTCC, watch this space…..
